Getting There- London To Karachi Wednesday 17th August 1994
The date was Wednesday 17th August 1994. I went down to London the cheap but long way on the National Express which called in just about everywhere between Leeds and London Heathrow Coach Terminal. Surprisingly we pulled in 10 minutes early in fact.
Since my flight did not depart until late in the evening I deposited my baggage at left luggage then went into London on the Tube to pass the time away. I got out at Leicester Square and I recall it being really beautiful. It was sunny and hundreds of people were sitting down and walking in the area.
I continued on walking down to Piccadilly Circus taking my time around the statue of Eros. I got back to Heathrow at around 6pm to collect my luggage. I checked in at Terminal 3 on Gulf Air 08 to Doha. The aircraft was a 767, an overnight flight to the Gulf. I was sitting next to an Indian chap who was going on to Mumbai and I didn't get much sleep since this bloke liked to chat.
We arrived into Doha at 7.25am.
I wrote in my journal whilst sitting inside the terminal building at Doha since I had a really tedious 5 hour wait for my connection to Karachi. I was exhausted and my eyes were burning red. I attempted to get a bit of shut eye by laying across some vacant seats wearing eye shades. It was useless owing to continual announcements being made.
To cap it all the flight to Karachi wasn't direct either. We flew first to Abu Dhabi and weren't allowed off. Now, the final leg of this epic journey would involve a short 1 hour 55 minute hop to Karachi. At last I was in Pakistan.
I was anticipating lots of hassle with customs in Karachi but my journal doesn't say whether that happened or not. It does inform me that I arrived at the Avari Towers Hotel at 9.15.
I had purposefully booked into this very expensive 5 star hotel in order to start the trip off on a high.
